How To Use Kroma Crackle

Step 1: Preparing the Surface
KROMA crackle can be applied to both rigid and flexible surfaces such as wood, cloth, canvas and paper. To get started, paint the surface with acrylic colour and allow to dry. This colour will show between the cracks. If you wish to have the existing surface material show through between the cracks, for example a wood finish, we recommend sealing the surface with clear acrylic medium and allowing it to dry completely before KROMA crackle application. This will ensure that reliable cracking occurs.

Step 2: Applying KROMA crackle
You may mix small amounts of acrylic colour to KROMA crackle - up to about 10%. If you do not add colour to the crackle medium, it will dry a semi-opaque white. Apply a later of crackle to the surface using a palette knife or similar tool. Consider crackle application similar to icing a cake - a generous layer will achieve a more dramatic effect. The thicker the application, the wider the cracks will form. The direction, thickness and flow of the medium can be manipulated to influence the direction and spacing of the cracks. Allow to dry for one to three days depending on the thickness of the crackle gel.

Step 3: Sealing the Cracked Surface
Brush a layer of clear acrylic fluid medium over the cracked surface to ensure strength and flexibility. We recommend diluting the acrylic fluid medium with 50% water, and using a fine bristled glazing brush. This prevents air bubbles forming.
